The Global Population Speak Out is pleased to announce our Population 7 Billion: It’s Time to Talk campaign. Designed to effectively address humanity surpassing the 7 billion mark on October 31st, we have partnered with leading conservation and sustainability organizations like the Post Carbon Institute, the Center for Biological Diversity and Population Media Center for this major effort. It is our hope that our combined forces will draw in many new voices to the population conversation.
We are looking for volunteers to help us get the word out about Population 7 Billion: It’s Time to Talk. Please contact us to learn how you can help.
There are 3 main activities for people to choose from in this program:
- Entry into the “Talk to The World” Video Contest
- Distribution of Endangered Species Condoms
- A traditional GPSO “Pledge” and “Speak Out”
Any of these options will raise public awareness about the unprecedented size and rapid growth of global human population. You can choose to participate in one, two or all three activities.
Why did we choose to do this? Soon after GPSO 2011 wrapped up last February, the United Nations Population Division announced that global population would surpass 7 billion on October 31st, 2011. Realizing that we needed to strongly respond to this historic and challenging event, or else leave it to pro-growth cheerleaders and other Pollyanna voices to define the moment, we made the decision to create this special edition GPSO.

There will be significant media attention around 7 billion, and it is up to us to make a lasting mark on the global discourse that springs up. Let your social networks know about this campaign, mention it to co-workers and friends, and use the other resources we are providing to raise awareness. Based on the successes of past GPSOs, we are confident that our global community is going to make a real difference with Population 7 Billion: It’s Time to Talk.
NOTE: To make life simpler for our Pledgers, we are taking “Action” reports via email for Population 7 Billion — rather than the web-based reporting feature we used for GPSO 2011.
