Working on population and development issues involves an examination of the causes and effects of population process at any given time and place. Births, deaths, and migration–and all other human activities these entail–have a profound impact on our environment, and the slightest misstep may affect its ecosystems. This is of particular concern for the Philippines, which ranked 10th globally for biological diversity, yet is also recognized as one of the world’s most endangered areas. Meeting the demands of a growing population has taken its toll on the Philippine environment, with government and industries practicing such unsustainable practices as [...] - Press Release: Mulat Pinoy Pop-I Video Contest – At ang nagwagi ay… - 2010-06-18

- Pop Bytes: Bayani Fernando at the Employment Kapihan - 2010-05-27

By Eva Callueng
One of our writers, Eva Callueng, writes about her experience as a PPCRV volunteer in Quezon City in the elections last May 10.
The COMELEC’s efforts towards poll automation received a variety of comments and criticism both from the national and international arena. The comments were mostly negative, and this created a mixed sense of fear and excitement. The system was feared to be yet another tool to perpetuate election fraud, and yet the whole country was excited because for the first time, the PCOS machines will read, count, tally, and transmit election results in record time. Not [...] - 2010-05-27
Bureau: North Cotabato
Reporters: Mary Joy Belandres, Nikko Garcia, Jovane Sansalona
The province of North Cotabato is considered a melting pot of traditions and customs that come from both indigenous and foreign backgrounds. It can, however, be said that because the city is predominantly a Muslim area, the greatest influences that have shaped the province come from the teachings of Islam and the Muslim culture.
Some locals believe that one area where their religious beliefs have a direct influence on is the growing population of the city. Many say that because it is acceptable in the Muslim tradition for a man to have [...] - Are you satisfied with the results of this election? Part 3 - 2010-05-17
A week after the country’s first automated elections, COMELEC has yet to proclaim a new president. But it seems evident that Noynoy and Binay are the tandem that will be leading the country for the next 6 years. Many people are not taking this lightly.
From the Philippine Daily Inquirer, by Nikko Dizon: Comelec asked to probe glitches, disenfranchised votes. MANILA, Philippines – Despite the fast transmission and tallying of results from the May 10 polls, election watchdog Kontra Daya (Against Cheating) said the country’s first automated elections were still “fraught with problems,” and called for an investigation into irregularities the group noticed based [...] - Are you satisfied with the results of this election? Part 2 - 2010-05-13
More disgruntled voters have been airing their grievances over various social networks.
David Tarog, gamer: “There is still hope for our country, but it doesn’t lie with the politicians. It lies with God and with those who serve Him wholeheartedly.“
Rafael Tesoro, production designer and gamer: “I didn’t even vote. Whoever I wanted wasn’t going to win anyway. so why waste time? And I don’t know or care to know about anyone else below most of the senatorial level. They’re all the same. That’s why I didn’t vote… done 2 elections already and the outcome is still the same. Either they’re corrupt [...] - PRESS RELEASE: All PCOS machines must be re-tested and certified error-free - 2010-05-06
This press release sent by NAMFREL via email on 6 May 2010. the press conference was held yesterday, 5 May 2010.
Parallel validation run and expanded random manual audit are necessary
In light of numerous problems which arose when PCOS machines were tested at voting centers and Smartmatic’s subsequent recall of the compact flash (CF) memory cards for all PCOS machines, the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) re-emphasizes the need for stronger validation measures of the accuracy of the PCOS machines through more rigorous testing of the newly-configured CF cards, an expanded Random Manual Audit (RMA), and a parallel [...] - Complete archive
